The Vanity of Vernacular Inheritance

In a country like ours with a vast and topographically varied geographical extent, it is not unnatural that different parts of it would be endowed with stark differences in their cultural elements comprising of food choices, social and religious customs and of course languages. These stark differences have played a big role in shaping the rich cultural history of the whole subcontinent and also dynamically played a role in aiding the assimilation and absorption of the foreign elements into our own way of life through the passage of time.

Through this natural course of cultural evolution different regions have been able to identify themselves as strongly knit communities having their own cultural past while belonging to a larger social and political fabric of a nation state. We can as easily identify the differences between the languages spoken in the southern and northern regions as we can contrast the food preferences between the western and eastern states.

As much as these variations are like the different coloured threads of a giant beautiful tapestry, there is a very agonizing outcome of such varied vernacular affiliations that poses a threat to the smooth amalgamation of the elements of such a diverse dynamic. One's identification with his or her own vernacular heritage is no doubt a matter of pride and satisfaction. But problem comes when such a sentiment degenerates to the extent of vanity. Then it changes the whole picture of a peaceful coexistence of varied elements into a struggle for establishing the supremacy of one over the other. Such kind of a cultural tussle does not remain limited to the extent of being a mere cultural debate but gradually percolates into many functional aspects of our everyday lives. It leads us into thinking that the literature from a certain region or language is superior to others, or a certain profession or vocation is a natural home turf of people speaking a certain language. This is where we shift from being an assimilative and tolerant society into one where different regional or linguistic identities function in the manner of cartels. The selfish intent of pushing one's own religious, cultural or linguistic identity over that of others to promote their own agenda creates divisive tendencies which not only hampers a natural cultural flow across regions but also creates an unhealthy environment of fear, doubt and mistrust across communities.

To take an example, merely the fact that Tusli Ramayan is a work in Awadhi dialect does not make it an exclusive heritage of the Awadhi, Maithili speaking region of India. It belongs as much to a Malayali or a Tamilian as much as it does to a Bhojpuri speaking person. A couplet ("sher") from Meer would mean the same if it comes out of the mouth of a Hindu or a Muslim or a Jain or a Parsi. A heritage is a heritage for all who find a reason to associate themselves to it, derive pleasure and solace from it.

In the present tumultuous times where every issue can be coloured in a divisive manner for the selfish gains of a small group of people, we should take extreme care to not lose sight of reason. We would have failed our cultural lineage and inheritance if we start seeing our victory in the plight of others.

The Mathematics of regret

I think as we go on accumulating the number of days in our life, we keep on filling two kinds of bags - one, a bag of "been there and done that", another of " should never have been there and should never  have done that". In my opinion, the quality or the measure of goodness of a life well spent is decided by the difference in the weights these two bags carry, but not by the separate "heaviness" of each.
And these bags fill not just because the wheel of time turns, but also because how intensely you "experienced" the life around you. For example, a raging alcoholic would have experienced a threshold of intoxication which a mild drinker might never know or understand. His intensity of experiencing inebriation surpasses that of the mild drinker, but possibly so his share of regrets with his damaged liver and who knows, personal relationships.
But what I am not sure about is, how should the alcoholic measure his situation ? I mean, on all those occasions when he must have gotten hammered, he must have enjoyed the thrill (or the relaxation) . So did he capitalize on the currency worth of paper to turn it into a rich experience ? Because if he had decided not to indulge in that moment, the equivalent amount of cash worth he still would have with him - but without the sequence of momentary blissfulness.
Or should he have played a far-sighted thinking gentleman and played along on the "safe" margins, to  ensure his fun and frolic doesn't get the better of him in the long run. But is he missing out on something ?
Well, in the above example there are obvious factors to bias our decision against the drunkard, but there could be situations where the choices could become fuzzy. Like for example, 3 romantic dinner nights in a month, going out with family on expensive holidays etc. or keeping it a notch or two down and always being prepared for contingencies.
The question I wish to bring to notice is what would decide the quantum of regret in a larger measure- having experienced less or having escaped the "possible" outcomes of our "short-sighted happiness". Who calls it a day, with a heavier share of one of the bags vs. the other - the reckless or the methodical ?

The Angry Good Fella

It seems very frustrating when you realise that you do not have a choice.  The sense of paralysis that comes with the realization that your voice, your concerns are systematically going to be sabotaged because they do not fit into the grand scheme of a "utopian euphoria" sold blatantly over public media, makes you feel impotent. Such a feeling I think is not healthy for the morale of a society that genuinely aims to function on an inclusive model.
Gradually over time, this gripping feeling has been haunting me that in our country slowly and slowly the public sector establishment or what one can call the " welfare state" is being reduced to the status of a manure to feed the corporate driven state. Such a development model indeed allows a competition driven society to flourish, making it possible for the motivated and resourceful to have a taste of the "pie" if I may call it. But as it stands out, motivated and resourceful are not always the same people. Former represent only a select few of the searing voices, that make up a socio-economic fabric of a country like ours.
But what becomes of the unheard ? Where would they go and what is left for them to fight for ?
Overhauling a system does not mean catering to the interest of a political or economic conglomerate just for the reason that such instruments have wider influence in shaping the structural changes (I am not still factoring in the vested interests). Recent debates over media bring to mind the example of an aquarium at home . Those who have it know that it needs to be cleaned from time to time. But to clean the aquarium the first priority is to ensure the survival of the fish during the cleaning process. Thus one makes arrangements to ensure that the fish are not harmed in the process of cleaning the tank. Once the tank is cleaned, they are brought back into it, safe and unscathed.
Such is the philosophy of initiating institutional or process changes imbibed in "Kaizen". It is a Japanese word that refers to a series of continuous changes and checks in a system or process that improves efficiency and reduces waste.  This is what we need now more than ever. The decisions made in one socio-economic arena are very intricately linked up to the other ones and if this realisation is absent in the decision making process, the entire machinery will sooner or later collapse.
But what seems to be happening now is a blatant display of how power aggrandizes power, how wealth attracts wealth and how honest public opinion is either drowned in the cacophony of sycophancy or being manipulated in a very comic and oppressive manner .
What I expect from the rulers is to be sensitive and inclusive in their sensibilities. They should not be the people whose parochial vision would make their people pay for it just because they cannot escape doing so.  Such sense of being and feeling victimized takes a nation far from being a democratic welfare state, an ideal we hoped to achieve and believe to be true for the sake of generations to come.
